Halloween Cake Decorating–Pumpkin Cake Part Two
Now that you have your two pumpkin cakes baked, we’re ready to get them decorated. Make sure that your cakes are COMPLETELY COOLED before moving onto the next step. This is very important! If you try to move your cake around when it’s still warm it will crack, crumble, and fall apart. Trust me–take it from someone who knows!
I would even recommend letting your cakes cool in the refrigerator for at least an hour after they have cooled completely at room temperature. This will ensure that they firm up well and are stable enough for handling. For this halloween cake decorating project you’ll need to gathering the following supplies:
#10, 11 or 12 icing tip (whichever one you happen to have on hand is fine)
piping bag
cake round decorated however you like it (I usually cover mine with a layer of holiday wrapping paper and then cover with heavy-duty saran wrap)
icing spatula
black food coloring gel
leaf green food coloring gel
sunset orange food coloring gel
large banana
You’ll need about two batches of buttercream frosting. 1 cup black, 1/2 cup green, and the rest orange.
Here’s a good halloween cake decorating tip: To make creating black frosting easier, make a small batch of chocolate frosting and then add black food coloring gel. Otherwise you’ll end up with purple frosting if you start with regular buttercream frosting.
1. After your cakes have cooled completely and your cake round is ready, gently turn one cake upside down and apply a crumb coat of orange frosting. Gently place the other cake on top ot it (right side up) and continue to crumb coat the entire cake. In order to get your cake level and shaped like a pumpkin you may need to sheer off the bottom of one cake with a long sharp knife (or use a cake leveler).
2. Once you have the crumb coat completed, proceed as usual with frosting the cake orange. You can frost the cake with a downward motion to create the lines found a real pumpkin.
3. With the black frosting, create two triangles for the eyes, one for the nose, and several triangles together to create a mouth shape. Place the banana through the top hole of your cake and cover it with the green frosting. You may need to cut off a piece in order to get it the length you want.
That’s it! Your first halloween cake decorating project is now complete! You now have a masterpiece to show off to your family and friends.
